A summer concert programme with a difference

Perform with 'one of the most impressive acts on the UK folk scene'

Looking for a summer programme with a difference? English folk duo Ninebarrow and conductor, arranger and composer Roy Rashbrook offer your choir an exciting opportunity to reach out to a new audience, while working with one of Britain’s most musically sympathetic and dynamic folk ensembles in this genuinely creative collaborative project

Listen to the 'The Hour of the Blackbird' showreel:

Whilst hearing them in a concert in 2016, classical singer, choral director, composer and arranger Roy Rashbrook felt frustrated that the audience was not quite up to the task of “joining in” with the subtly lithe choruses of these beautiful songs - and so decided to arrange them himself.

The result is 'The Hour of the Blackbird' - a programme of eight unique arrangements of Ninebarrow’s songs for SATB choir, to be performed alongside the folk duo themselves. The arrangements are available in two levels of difficulty, for intermediate and more advanced choirs.

Who are Ninebarrow?

NINEBARROW are a multi-award-winning folk duo, who are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Combining breath taking vocal harmonies and melodies, they deliver songs and stories inspired by the landscape and history of the British Isles.

Roy Rashbrook

Roy has himself tried and tested the arrangements in a number of concert performances with his two amateur chamber choirs, with each occasion resulting in a highly successful and enjoyable concert which broadened their audience base, whilst offering something appealingly new yet traditional to all those involved.

How is it organised?

These arrangements are now being made available to other choirs to perform as part of a concert programme together with Ninebarrow. Once a concert date has been agreed, Roy will provide:

  • booklets of printed music for conductor and choir, either for hire or purchase,

  • audio resources, including rehearsal recordings of each voice part.

If desired, Roy could also be available to take one of the choir’s regular rehearsals in the run-up to the concert, subject to a rehearsal fee to be arranged in advance.

The concert date itself would need to be negotiated with Ninebarrow, who would charge a flat-rate fee for the day, being available to rehearse on the afternoon prior to the performance. Jon and Jay would also provide all of the necessary sound and lighting equipment for the show.

What does the concert look like?

How the concert is structured is entirely up to you - but a possible structure might look like this:

First Half:

Your Choir - A Cappella Folk Song Arrangements - 30 minutes.

Interval

Second Half
Ninebarrow - a selection of songs from their three albums - 20 minutes.

Ninebarrow & Your Choir - 8 songs arranged for Choir and Folk Duo - 50 minutes.

What do the scores look like and how difficult are they?

Roy has created two arrangements for each of the eight Ninebarrow songs: one intermediate and one advanced. There are also audio examples of each part to help your choir members with learning the arrangements.
